We’re a fast-growing and ambitious charity that was set up byThe Economist, a weekly magazine covering global news. Our mission is to tackle inequality by giving disadvantaged young people the skills to think for themselves about current affairs.
In the UK, a young person’s background powerfully determines their opportunities. This is unfair. We help to address this problem by combiningThe Economist’s journalistic know-how with teaching expertise to enable inspiring discussions about current affairs in state schools. These discussions give young people tools that can change their chances: they build essential knowledge, critical thinking, literacy skills and confidence.
We have big plans to increase our impact by expanding our core programme, the Burnet News Club, and exploring new ways to spark important conversations about the news in schools. We are creating this new role as part of the next phase of the Foundation’s growth.About the opportunity
We are looking for someone with exceptional organisation and communication skills to play a key role in enabling the next stage of our growth. The Marketing and Administration Executive will help us to reach more schools, grow awareness of our work through social media engagement, and provide administrative support to ensure high-quality delivery of our projects as we scale up.
Engaging new schools: You will be able to explain our work in a clear, inspiring way to busy teachers, and build positive relationships. You will be exceptionally well-organised and persistent in following up with lots of schools by email and on the phone, maintaining up-to-date and tidy databases.
Organising and representing the Foundation at events: Working with the School Relationships Manager, you will identify suitable events where we can promote our work, from large education shows to teacher meetings and everything in between. You will secure opportunities for us to attend these events, working with our Designer to make sure exhibition stands are on brand, and liaising with the venue about logistical arrangements. In addition to arranging for other Foundation members to be present, you will have the opportunity to attend events yourself and have engaging conversations with attendees. You will follow up on leads and develop new relationships from these events into participating schools.
Providing essential administrative support: By providing essential administrative support across our projects, you will be able to learn first-hand how an innovative charitable programme is designed and run, and play a key role in delivering it to a high standard. You will be motivated by excellent organisation and enjoy thinking ahead, working systematically and solving problems. You will support participating schools by responding to their enquiries, answering teachers’ questions with confidence and making sure queries or important updates get to the right person in the team.Growth and development

- Outstanding organisational skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Extremely reliable: able to manage time, solve problems and juggle different responsibilities to meet deadlines.
- Exceptionally strong, confident and compelling communicator. Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including by email, phone and in person.
- Passionate about the Foundation’s mission and activities, and excited to play an essential role in a small charity.
- At least 1 year’s relevant experience, such as organising events, managing databases or email / phone marketing.
- Energy, motivation and tenacity to keep up momentum with schools and get what we need from busy teachers.
- Self-starter with the energy, initiative and flexibility to thrive in a dynamic organisation.
- Willingness to travel within the UK.
- Experience working with schools would be a bonus.
- Proficiency in MS Excel and / or Salesforce CRM would be a bonus.
This role will involve working with young people, so you will need to have a DBS check (which the Foundation will organise).Diversity and inclusion
