Microsoft Research in Cambridge (UK) is looking for an insightful and creative design intern, with a passion for exploring real world issues for the future of work. The successful candidate will contribute to an ambitious, multi-disciplinary project on transforming productivity and empowering people with AI. The project is in collaboration with and funded by the Microsoft Office user experience organization, whose productivity tools are used by more than 1.2 billion people worldwide. We are looking for someone who can produce insights to help people work within, or make sense of, complex systems or domains.

There is no closing deadline for this post. The post will be filled once suitable candidates are found so if you are interested please apply as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will apply a research through design process to the problem of understanding how people use sets of multiple tools, as well as old and new resources, in the context of collaborative workflows. They will need to do some combination of:

· Foundational research

· Defining a focus within the problem space

· Developing concepts

· Prototyping (low and high fidelity)

· Gathering and reporting on prototype feedback

Outputs will depend on the successful candidate's skillset, but are intended to contribute to both Microsoft Research's longer-term research effort and Microsoft Office's product strategy.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have (or be undertaking) a Master’s level degree or higher in interaction, graphic or product design (or similar), and will have a portfolio of design work that demonstrates their capabilities across the entire design process. Proven skills in collaborative work are a must, as they will be working with developers and researchers in Cambridge as well as remotely with the Microsoft Office team. Proven capabilities with sketching and prototyping tools are also essential (Sketch, Illustrator, Photoshop, Principle preferred).

Experience in producing a clear, systems-oriented solution in complex domains such as knowledge work, education, healthcare or media is a plus, as is industry or research experience. Experience with systems that leverage AI to deliver value to users is a plus.
