Nesta is looking for an intern to assist with the work of the innovation mapping team, where we seek to transform innovation policy with big data and data science methods. This is an area where Nesta is quickly developing a track record of original research.

The role will be in support to various innovation mapping projects currently taking place and being developed at Nesta.

Although the specifics of the role depend on intern skill sets and preferences, we expect that it will involve a mix of data collection and processing, exploratory data analysis, modelling and visualisation. The role will be particularly suitable for recent graduates from a data science / analytics related discipline who want to get their hands dirty using new and interesting data sources and state of the art methods to address big policy questions, and build up their experience working as part of interdisciplinary data science teams.

The role

  • Support various innovation mapping projects currently taking place and being developed at Nesta. Depending on intern skill sets and preferences this might involve:
  • Identifying, accessing and exploring interesting data sources, including web, open and official datasets. This might require web scraping, working with APIs, working with relational databases and/or processing and tidying structured data from official sources.
  • Analysing the data using supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods, natural language processing and/or social network analysis.
  • Visualising the data using static and interactive visualisations, maps and network graphs
  • All the above based on reviews of the relevant academic and technical literatures to ensure that we are looking at the right questions using suitable methods, and mindful of potential data quality issues and lessons learned by previous researchers.
  • Reporting findings in research notes and short blogs.

Note that we are not looking for a unicorn with the skills to do all the above, but someone with a strong data science foundation, an interest in learning and a desire to have an impact.

The Person

  • A first or 2.1 Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. data science, data analytics, machine learning, computer science). Social scientists with relevant skills and interests are also welcome to apply
  • Strong quantitative data processing and analysis skills, including knowledge of data analysis software, and data science relevant programming languages. We use Python in the team, but also welcome people who use R.
  • Other potentially useful / relevant skills include data management in relational (SQL) and non-relational databases, big data processing, interactive data visualisation and mapping (e.g. with D3.js, Leaflet.js) and network mapping (with Sigma.js, or Gephi).
  • A demonstrable interest in innovation and technology
  • Excellent attention to detail, high standards of accuracy, proactive and a self-starter
  • Experience in research and project management. Knowledge of data science workflows and collaboration platforms (e.g. git) are welcome..
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Able to research and work independently
