ROYAL DEVON AND EXETER HOSPITAL NHS TRUSTCONSULTANT IN UPPER GI SURGERY
CLOSING DATE – 20th November 2018Come for a visit, stay forever! With 500km of stunning coastline, beautiful countryside and 2 rugged moors, Devon has everything you and your family could want for an exciting and fulfilling life. Exeter is a city of contrast: a modern shopping centre with a “Café Society” feel, selling everything from the latest hi tech gadgets and sports gear to designer outfits: surrounded by ancient cobbled streets with unique local shops, dominated by the incredible gothic Cathedral.
This post has been created to further modernise the Upper GI and Emergency Surgery Service in Exeter. This post is intended to support, and be an integral member in, the development of pathways for patients with acute conditions, particularly biliary pathology with particular emphasis on the provision for the surgical management of ‘hot gallbladders’, the introduction of day case laparoscopic cholecystectomy in our dedicated day case unit at Heavitree hospital, and assist with meeting the demand for routine procedures.
The Emergency Surgery rota is delivered in our dedicated Surgical Triage and Assessment Unit (STAU) linked with Emergency operating theatres, fast-track investigation and ambulatory care pathways. It is this post, along with one additional colorectal position in 2019, that will bring the workforce to 14 GI consultants (10 colorectal and 4 upper GI) who will provide a high quality and sustainable GI service at the RD&E. An entire service redesign is currently underway, with plans for implementation in April 2019.
A sub-specialty interest in laparoscopic surgery is essential and experience in ERCP would be desirable. The post is available from January 2019.
The RD&E has developed a reputation as an innovative, leading acute hospital over 250 years. The Trust was one of the first in the country to achieve Foundation status. It makes a significant contribution to world-class research and development that improves the quality, experience and effectiveness of healthcare. The Research, Innovation, Learning and Development Centre on site was completed in January 2014. It is a £27.5m development, which consists of the Wellcome Wolfson Centre for Medical Research, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Exeter Clinical Research Facility, and a new Post Graduate Education Centre.
The recently established and forward thinking University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS) employs the wealth of resources at the RD&E for teaching and training.
Exeter is a vibrant University City, with a buzzing night life, theatres, pubs and cinemas as well as great schools and family amenities, all you would expect from a bustling city (with the added bonus of being surrounded by fantastic countryside). It is also situated about 20 minutes from a beach and 30 minutes form Dartmoor. If that isn’t enough to keep you here at weekends, its just 2 hours to London by Train or 3 hours by car using the M5/M4. The local airport offers internal and external flights daily if you want to go farther. But why would you want to leave! Beautiful North Devon is only an hour away...
All this and a great job in an innovative acute hospital serving approximately 400,000 people! The RDE also boasts its own newly built, outstanding, on-site Nursery and is located at the heart of the beautiful city close to schools and other amenities.
