ISIS is a world leading centre in physical and life science research using neutrons and muons as scientific tools. This position will be based in ISIS biology laboratory, part of ISIS support laboratories group. ISIS biology laboratories have a wide range of equipment to help beam time users to prepare their samples for beam time.

You will have an opportunity to work in our bio lab, mainly in commissioning a bio fermenter, used to grow bacteria under optimised conditions. They will be working to support the users in preparing their samples and hence optimising the growth conditions of various species of bacteria to increase the protein yield. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to learn molecular cloning and genetic modification techniques widely used in biological research areas. This will give you a chance to work closely with the ISIS Large Scale Structure group (LSS).

Protein characterisation and purification –For successful SANS and NR experiments on biological molecules (proteins, polypeptides and nucleic acids) the sample purity, homogeneity and solubility have to be extensively optimized before the experiment. You will characterise the protein homogeneity under the conditions that will be used for neutron experiments using biophysical techniques such as SDS-PAGE, size-exclusion chromatography, circular dichroism, analytical ultracentrifugation, dynamic light scattering, multi-angle static light scattering.

Responsibilities

  • to develop method for using Bio fermenter for fed batch and continuous batch with various bacterial species
  • to prepare documentation for the above procedures
  • to support ISIS users in sample preparation and characterisation.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Shortlisting (S) and Interview (I) Criteria

Essential:

  • at university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry (S)
  • right to live and work in the UK (S)

Desirable:

  • grade A in Biology, Maths and Chemistry in A levels.
  • understanding of Molecular Biology (S&I)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • basic biology knowledge and understanding of bacterial growth dynamics. (S&I)
  • biology Lab experience

Desirable:

  • lab experience
  • knowledge of aseptic techniques
  • understanding of BIOCOSHH and Genetic modifications
  • knowledge of aseptic techniques
  • molecular cloning
  • ability to write scientific experimental reports

Special Requirements

Essential:

  • comfortable to be working in radiation and controlled area
  • willingness to work with Class 1 and class 2 pathogens.
