Online applications are invited for a consultant in clinical genetics. This post is a permanent position. University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust provides specialist services to more than 3.7 million people in central southern England and the Channel Islands. The Trust is a major centre for teaching and research and hosts the Wessex Genomic Medicine Centre. The Wessex Clinical Genetics Service is a Regional Service based at the Princess Anne Hospital, currently integrated with the Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory in Salisbury and Genomic Laboratory Hub in Birmingham. The service covers the whole of the Wessex region including working at remote sites and travelling to other provider sites. There are excellent links between the Clinical Genetics Service and Southampton University with several Clinical Academics in Genetics holding key university posts.
The Wessex Genetics service offers an exciting opportunity to take up a substantive post within this fast developing service. We are looking for a full-time (8 DCC; 2 SPA) Consultant to join an expanding, dynamic Clinical Genetics service. The job plan will include regional clinics within the Wessex area with both general and paediatric sessions, as well as carrying out in-patient consultations as required. This post is expected to cover a population of about 600,000 people and the geographical area to be covered is subject to change to accommodate the needs of the service.
This is a full time permanent general and cancer genetics Consultant post. It is a replacement post and the successful applicant will join a team of 12 consultant geneticists (9.3 WTE) and 11 genetic counsellors. We would be very pleased to receive enquiries from candidates with particular special interests and to discuss how these could be developed to complement the interests of the existing team. In addition to cancer genetics, current specialty interests include cardiac, eye, renal and endocrine genetics and metabolic bone disorders, neurogenetics and prenatal genetics.
The service offers excellent development opportunities in a regional specialist service with close access to teaching, academic and research opportunities. Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council and be eligible for inclusion onto the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK must have evidence of Higher Speciality Training leading to a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Clinical Genetics, or the expected date of award of their CCT falls no more than 6 months after the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role. Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible. Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
