Consultant in Emergency Surgery
This is a substantive appointment to complement the existing general and acute general surgery consultant staff. The appointee would be expected to have completed recognised general surgical training to consultant level, have gained accreditation and specialist registration and a demonstration of interest in the field of emergency surgery is desirable. Laparoscopic skills and experience are essential.
The successful Emergency General Surgeon would participate in the General Surgery emergency on-call rota on a 1:6 frequency and this would make up the majority, but not all, of their work. There is already an Emergency General Surgeon in post who undertakes a 1 in 6 on call frequency. The 7 other surgeons contribute to the rest of the on call rota. The appointee will be expected to develop emergency surgery services and to work in partnership with all surgeons across the trust. It is anticipated that the non-emergency component of the appointees’ work would be tailored according to their experience, training and service needs to include outpatient clinics, elective operating sessions, patient administration, ward rounds and SPA time, with commensurate time off following on-call spells.
Following the investment of £150 million in major new facilities at the Lister, along with a £30 million New QEII hospital built by the local clinical commissioning group, the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has brought together all its specialist emergency and inpatient services at the Stevenage hospital. Our state-of–the-art clinical facilities include a major new Emergency Department, the Hertfordshire Cardiology Centre (which includes a 24/7 PPCI service), new scanning centre, McMillan chemotherapy unit, ward, endoscopy and theatre blocks. The Trust also currently provides a separate complete elective and emergency Vascular service.
Applicants must be on the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of doing so, at the time of interview. Applications from those wishing to work part-time or job share are welcomed.
