As part of Dentons, you’ll be given all the responsibility you can handle. You’ll learn on the job by taking a real part in running deals and cases, meeting with real clients and taking your place in the fast-paced and increasingly global world of business. After all, it’s this type of experience that makes great lawyers and prepares you for the daily pressures of your professional career. At Dentons, you’ll get it almost from day one.

If commercial law is your ambition, beginning your career with us will help you fulfil it. You’ll be welcomed into a team globally renowned for its expertise. We’ll help you develop your skills and knowledge in an open and supportive environment.

Your career

Our worldwide reputation is built on the expertise of our lawyers, who are specialists in many different areas of the law. If you’re ambitious enough to join them, we’ll help you build a career that is everything you want it to be.

It won’t be easy, but it will be rewarding. Our career framework will give you the structure you need to climb as high as you wish to go. We’ll also give you all the tools and guidance you need to realise your potential. The rest is up to you and what you can bring to the Firm.

Support and development

We see our trainees as the future of our Firm, which is why we’ll put many resources into your development. But it isn’t just about learning the law. Dealing with clients and colleagues is also part of what you’ll learn. You’ll receive daily support from your supervisor, trainee representatives and our Human Resources department. In each of our practices, a partner will also hold responsibility for overseeing your training and mentoring you while you progress.

To ensure you stay on the right track, you’ll also get frequent feedback – informally on a day-to-day basis, in a mid-seat review at the three-month stage and through a formal appraisal at the end of each seat. This means that you can learn as you go rather than only hear feedback retrospectively; something which we know would be frustrating for you.

Career progression

If you’re reading this then we know you want to progress your career and Dentons is certainly a place that can help take you where you want to go. Our career framework is designed to identify and reward talent and crucially, it will enable and encourage you to progress at a pace that suits you.

That means your training won’t end once you qualify. Far from it. You’ll continue to hone your legal skills and knowledge at weekly seminars and workshops. These carefully designed sessions aim to help you develop and support your legal knowledge within the particular area of law that you qualify in. It will ensure that you keep learning and developing your career as you proceed into it.

Who we’re looking for

There’s no such things as a ‘typical’ trainee solicitor at Dentons and that’s the way we like it. The expertise within our Firm is as diverse as the needs of our global clients. Our clients are people with a wide range of skills, aptitudes and personalities and so it is essential that our people are too. All they have in common is the ability to contribute to our growing success.

Our clients particularly want to work with well-rounded individuals who have hobbies and interests away from work, so think about what makes you stand out from the crowd.

Being enthusiastic about tackling all tasks, both big and small, is essential, as is having the drive and ambition that will enable you to succeed in a highly demanding work environment. As a Dentons trainee, you’ll need to be able to manage a varied workload, whilst maintaining an appreciation of the intricacies, all of which provide the foundations of exceptional client service.

We accept training contract applications from penultimate-year law students, final-year law and non-law students and those who have completed their undergraduate law or non-law degree. You must have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) and a minimum of ABB at A Level.

Salary and benefits

Train with us and we’ll gladly recognise your value. You’ll earn a competitive salary of £40,000 for first-year London trainees, rising to £44,000 in the second year and £65,000 upon qualification. In Milton Keynes & Watford first-year trainees earn £28,500, rising to £30,000 in the second year and £44,000 upon qualification.

We’ll also pay your GDL/LPC law school fees during actual years of study, as well as study maintenance grants of £5,000 per year of study (£6,000 in London) during actual years of study.

On top of that, during your training contract you’ll enjoy numerous benefits – and you’ll get to choose the ones that best fit your lifestyle, from the option to buy or sell holiday, private health cover, income protection insurance, subsidised gym membership, pension and many others.

Training contracts application process

To apply, first complete the online application, which we will assess. If you’re successful at this point you’ll be invited to take a Watson Glaser critical thinking test, which tests your analytical ability.

If you meet our benchmark percentile in the Watson Glaser critical thinking test, you will be invited to an interview with a member of our Graduate Recruitment team. This is a competency-based opportunity for you to expand on your application form and for us to learn more about your abilities first hand. The behavioural interview is the final stage for vacation scheme applications – if you meet all of the criteria at your interview, we will offer you a place on our vacation scheme.

The final stage of our application process is an assessment centre. This will be held on the final day of the vacation scheme or on a separate date following your first interview, if you have applied for the training contract only. The assessment centre will involve a written exercise & role play and a case study & final interview, both of which will give us an idea of how you’d perform as a Dentons trainee.

We understand that applying for a training contract is a two-way process, so during the assessment centre you’ll have the opportunity to meet partners, associates and trainees and ask lots of questions – so you can be sure we’re the right firm for you.

Applicants who successfully complete this stage will be offered a training contract.
