Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust is seeking a full-time researcher to undertake the role of full time Band 5 Research Assistant on the ERA multicentre randomised controlled trial, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest ever trials of arts therapies in an NHS Trust with a large compliment of Arts Therapy Services. The post will suit applicants with experience of working with and supporting service users in NHS mental health services or those with experience of NHS Research and Development work. Knowledge and understanding of the arts therapies is desirable and the post may be of interest to newly qualified arts therapists.
The overall aim of the ERA trial is to test the effectiveness of group arts therapies compared to group counselling for diagnostically heterogeneous community mental health patients in a multicentre randomised controlled trial. The trial is supported by the Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit at Queen Mary University of London and will involve an additional process evaluation utilising both quantitative and qualitative methods.
This post will be based within our Research and Development Department in Bristol and we may be required to travel between sites – including research activities primarily undertaken in Bath and North East Somerset with the potential for additional activities in Bristol, South Gloucester and North Somerset. The post-holder will work to help to identify, recruit, consent and support patients through the research process as well as providing support as necessary to study teams and clinicians. They will have excellent communication skills with experience of working with and supporting people with severe mental illness alongside excellent self-organisational skills. They will be able to work methodically and accurately with good attention to detail.
The main duties of the post-holder will be recruitment of patients into the ERA study, including taking of informed consent, monitoring recruitment rates, communicating regularly with the R&D department, trial manager, Principal Investigator and Chief Investigators regarding any issues, and completing quantitative and qualitative interviews with participants. He or she will actively promote research amongst clinicians, service users and the wider NHS.
The post-holder will also be responsible for entering research data and may be required to assist in data analysis and the publication and dissemination of findings.
The successful candidate will be familiar with participant recruitment in mental health services and the collection, management and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Knowledge and understanding of psychosocial interventions, particularly the arts therapies and research experience in the mental health field is desirable.
The Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry, with which the post is affiliated, is designated a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre the only one in the world specifically for 'mental health services development'. Interviews will be held on 26th November 2018. Please ensure you are available to attend, should you be shortlisted for this role.
