This position will be responsible for delivery of, and assisting with, a wide range of Accounting processes. The person will be given responsibility to execute and improve these processes so that the immediate Accounting and wider organisational objectives are met in the most time efficient, accurate and effective manner.

Responsibilities of the Financial Accountant include:

  • Monthly review and challenge of balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Assisting with quarterly intercompany ‘service billing’ recharge processes.
  • Daily preparation and reporting of power and gas trading exchange reconciliations.
  • Monthly gross margin/profit and loss financial close responsibility including accurate journal entries in relation to the operation of the Company’s power stations, accruals and provisions analysis and variance analysis.
  • Preparation of monthly accounting entries and analysis relating to the Company’s Long Term Service Agreements (LTSAs).
  • Complex government returns e.g. Office for National Statistics and carbon levy returns.
  • Industry-specific analysis of key income and expense items, for example Ancillary Services revenue and Balancing Use of System (BSUoS) charges.
  • Preparation of complex VAT returns.
  • Preparation of FRS101 annual statutory accounts.
  • Provision of income and expenditure analysis for corporation tax computations.
  • External annual audit support and liaison for US GAAP and FRS 101 reporting.
  • Payments approval responsibility and supplier details change approval responsibility - at all times strictly complying with existing cash management related internal controls.
  • Participation or responsibility of various continuous improvement and finance initiatives.
  • Other ad-hoc tasks as required by the Manager, Financial Accounting and Treasury.

Main Contacts

  • Directly reporting to Manager, Financial Accounting and Treasury
  • Interaction with immediate accounting team, including Financial Controller
  • Wider, regular contact with Treasury, Business Performance and Analysis, Trading and Risk teams
  • Ad-hoc contact with regional power plant teams
  • External auditors


  • A self-starter with an ability to work independently when required and to learn quickly
  • Strong analytical skills, addressing and solving problems in a structured manner with high attention to detail
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate complex ideas both verbally and in writing
  • Organised and disciplined, with a high degree of personal accountability and an ability to prioritise and change priorities at short notice
  • Committed to continuous improvement, able to identify situations where simplicity or complexity is required
  • Appetite for responsibility and ability to take ownership of projects
  • Advanced Excel and Outlook, skills
  • JDE experience beneficial but not essential


  • Recently qualified or part-qualified professional qualification (CA, ACCA, ACA, CIMA)
  • Energy Industry experience preferred, but not essential
  • Previous experience within a medium-large sized commercial enterprise/accounting practice
