General Summary:

To assist and perform a range of Actuarial tasks as required within Unum. To develop their actuarial knowledge in line with the Actuarial Development Programme and become a qualified Actuary.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Actuarial Trainees are expected to move between functions to develop competence in the different Actuarial activities carried out within Unum.
  • To assist in Actuarial activities as required.
  • To actively develop knowledge in Unum Actuarial activities.
  • To undertake ad hoc Actuarial project work as required.
  • Training and scheduling of work to ensure that team objectives are achieved and the team becomes a multi-disciplined and flexible workforce.
  • Ensure that all documentation on work and processes within the team is complete and up to date.
  • Find better ways of performing the team’s work and then make recommendations and successfully implement if the changes are approved.
  • To own Actuarial tasks, understand the broader business implications and develop insight into those tasks and their outcomes.
  • To pursue opportunities to liaise with the broader business and to develop the ability to communicate confidently and effectively on technical topics

  • Ensure the continued protection of Unum’s information, by following all applicable Information Security policies and procedures and by reporting suspected weaknesses in information security controls to the Information Security Officer.
  • Understand how Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) and Risk Management relate to both your own role and your divisional activities and highlight any opportunities for improvement.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, or subject with a strong mathematical/statistical element with a 2:1 or higher (in the last three years).
  • A or higher in A level Mathematics (or a maths related subject).
  • Highly numerate with high levels of accuracy and attention to detail and figures.
  • Strong internship or equivalent work experience.
  • IT literate with experience in using packages including Word and Excel and be willing to learn further skills, including programming languages.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liase with and lead teams, ensuring excellent levels of verbal and written communication at all times.
  • Ability to work under pressure, managing own time to meet tight deadlines and managing competing and conflicting demands within your workload.
  • Motivated, enthusiastic and enquiring.
  • Basic knowledge of Unum; actuarial activities; systems and databases; and products.
