Students studying Electronic Engineering (BEng (Hon) / MEng) have the opportunity to experience a 13 week paid summer placement working as an Electronics Hardware Engineer within Leonardo. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to experience the work carried out in integrated project teams (IPT) developing state-of-the-art radar and electro-optic products. Placement students will report to an experienced engineer who will provide them with day to day guidance and on the job training. They will be introduced to the hardware development processes and utilise state-of-the-art methods, technology and tools.
Placement students will gain experience on an aspect of the development lifecycle. This could include requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, applied research and test. Placement students will be given the opportunity to learn about the Leonardo product via a placement within a real IPT. The Placement student will work for an experienced engineer contributing to the solving of real life engineering problems on state of the art avionics sensor systems. Particular emphasis will be placed on learning practical skill that may not be easily gain or experienced in the academic environment of university. Students applying for this position should demonstrate an interest in one or more of the disciplines with in Electronics Hardware Engineering. (ie RF engineering, Microwave engineering, Power supply engineering, EMC engineer, FPGA and high speed digital engineering ) Students that complete their placement successfully and meet the required standard may be given the opportunity to be "fast tracked" to an MEng placement, a further summer placement or Graduate position at Leonardo.
Key Responsibility Areas
To learn the skills required for hardware development. This could include developing practical skills in design techniques for aerospace applications, understanding of key technologies, developing experience using ECAD tools and test equipment. To deliver technical reports and presentations on you work assignments to you supervisor and fellow placement students
Most training will be delivered via on the job experience work on real production hardware within projects groups delivering sensor systems to our customers. Additional formal technical training to augmented the on the job training may be provided via taught courses depending on the business needs.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
You should be matriculated in a MEng or BEng (hons) course in Electrical and Electronic engineering, or related discipline. We normally only consider candidates who are about to commence their penultimate year or final year. A full statement of courses and projects studied at university and corresponding grades/marks/percentage should be included in your CV.
Applications are also welcomed from candidates who have completed a first degree in electronics and are looking to gain industrial experience prior to commencing a relevant higher degrees (ie PhD, MSc) Candidate are required to demonstrate personal ownership and responsibility for their work, team working skills, technical excellence, creative problem solving ability, communication skills and leadership potential. Evidence of specialist knowledge and or interest in the area of RF engineering, Microwave engineering, Power supply engineering, EMC engineer, FPGA and high speed digital engineering may be an advantage.
