Ofcom is at the cutting edge of modern communications - from broadcasting on TV and radio, to telecoms and how we communicate with each other, to new wireless technologies. Our graduates play a key role in all of these areas. Join us, and you can get involved from the start.

On the graduate scheme, you will embark on a two-year series of intensive job placements, moving regularly between projects and departments to ensure that the knowledge and insight you are exposed to is as broad as possible. So, one week you might be devising new policy directives; the next, monitoring content standards. On successful completion of the two-year scheme you will make the transition into a permanent role in one of the business areas relevant to your chosen pathway.

The Role

As a graduate statistician you will be part of the market research team at Ofcom, working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams to help ensure our policies have a sound evidence base and deliver a real, long-term benefit to consumers in communications markets. For example, you could:

  • Help to advise research managers and suppliers on appropriate sampling and statistical analysis across a range of research projects, particularly for tracking surveys and more complex research projects;
  • Help to advise on the practical application of statistical and modelling techniques with consumer data, particularly for projects involving economic concepts and analysis;
  • Guide project team members on the appropriate use of statistics;
  • Provide ad-hoc statistical analysis as required and produce analysis using a range of existing data sets such as media literacy, technology tracker and switching tracker;
  • Project-manage research projects, from commissioning through to publication;
  • Commission and manage statistical analysis from suppliers;
  • Deliver geographic mapping analysis for key projects; and
  • Explore and carry out analysis on very large datasets on mobile research and fixed broadband speeds.

A wide-ranging training programme would be available to you. This includes specialist statistical training as required such as SPSS, STATA and qualitative and quantitative market research methodologies and analysis techniques such as conjoint, key driver and segmentations. Ofcom would also sponsor membership of relevant professional organisations, such as the Royal Statistical Society and the Market Research Society.

Ofcom also offers a large internal training programme to support colleague development.

During your two years on the programme, we offer six-month placements moving between projects, industry sectors and departments within Ofcom, exposing you to a range of knowledge and insight. You will primarily be placed within the market research team working both with research and intelligence colleagues. Possible placements include Consumer Policy, Competition Group, and the Technology team or externally with one of our research agencies from our Framework.
