In addition there will be a weekly academic session at the University Hospital of Wales. The post holder will be fully involved in education, research and development, and clinical audit programmes, and will be expected to play a major part in the academic development of the Rheumatology Service in South East Wales. Evidence of a commitment to research and teaching is therefore essential. A specialist interest that complements existing areas of specialisation in Gwent (metabolic bone disease, early inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease) and at the University Hospital of Wales would be encouraged.
The number of SPAs may vary with the agreement of the post holder and the Health Board in advance or after commencement and an increase in SPAs would accompany an agreement to take on additional duties such as educational supervision of a junior doctor.
The Gwent Rheumatology Service endeavours to provide an equitable, Gwent-wide service for all patients. Facilities are also available at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport for emergency admissions and at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, the Royal Gwent Hospital and St Woolos Hospital for outpatients. A major feature of this service is that a broad range of expertise in rheumatic disease is available, through the link with the University Hospital of Wales which provides a tertiary referral centre encompassing expertise in paediatric rheumatology. All posts will be strongly supported by clinical specialists in physiotherapy and occupational therapy in both North and South Gwent.
Outpatient clinics will be held at The Royal Gwent Hospital. There is a six bed rheumatology day unit at Nevill Hall Hospital providing biologics infusion services and access to inpatient beds at the Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall Hospitals.
An additional feature of this service is a commitment to working with general practitioners to develop their role on the longer term management of rheumatic diseases. The appointee will need to be actively involved in taking forward this work through GP discussion groups, continuing education and the development of protocols and clinical pathways.
The existing Gwent Consultants are all strongly committed to the weekly South Wales, Cardiff-based Academic programme and are also involved in a working party looking at the creation of a Wales Arthritis Rheumatology network.
All existing Consultants are involved in teaching Medical Students from the school of Medicine, Cardiff University during the musculoskeletal block of their training in Gwent. Regular multidisciplinary meetings on a two monthly basis have also been established.
The non-consultant staff at Nevill Hall Hospital comprises one training registrar and a FP1 & CMT (shared equally with Haematology). There are also seven clinical nurse specialists and two rheumatology support nurse providing specialist services, infusions and a telephone helpline service in the Gwent area.
