Background on the Firm
J A Kemp is one of the largest UK and European Patent and Trade Mark Attorney firms, with offices in London, Oxford, Cambridge, Paris and Munich. J A Kemp’s patent attorneys handle patent applications in the UK, Europe and worldwide. The firm has particular expertise in patent oppositions and appeals, especially before the European Patent Office. The firm also conducts intellectual property litigation. J A Kemp works for a huge variety of clients, from startups, spinouts and SMEs through to unicorns, ex-unicorns, well established corporates and the most prestigious academic institutions in the world. We have clients working in a variety of technical areas including networking, machine learning, GUIs, gaming, image processing and rendering, music and audio.
What we are looking for
The academic requirements are rigorous. Candidates should have an excellent track record of achievement at school and university with a minimum of a 2.1 honours degree in computer science. We are open to applications from candidates holding or studying for a first or higher degree or doctorate.
Excellent spoken and written English are essential to the role, as are an eye for detail and the ability to explain complex matters clearly. We are also looking for candidates who are proactive, outgoing and friendly, team players and good listeners.
What we offer
We offer a programme of training to take you right through to qualification as a patent attorney (European and UK Chartered). We support you with one to one mentoring, external courses, internal tutorials and on-the-job training. Our reputation for training and our record of first-time examination successes are second to none. We will continue to support your professional development throughout your career with the firm.
We usually encourage trainee patent attorneys to start with us in the autumn, in a recognised peer group, although we can be flexible about start dates. We encourage applications before the end of the calendar year for candidates who wish to start the following autumn.
