The Citrix Hypervisor Engineering group invites candidates to apply for a Software Engineering post on the Performance R&D team in Cambridge.

Citrix Hypervisor is the server virtualisation product built on top of the Xen hypervisor. It is widely used in datacentres, from small companies right up to the largest cloud providers. Originally a start-up spun out from the University of Cambridge, we are now based in Citrix's modern Research and Development centre on the Cambridge Science Park.

The Performance team works on optimising whole-system performance by identifying bottlenecks and developing improvements to remove them. It is a development team with a strong research focus, and involves interactions with all the other engineering teams and components (e.g., storage and data path, Windows virtual machines, orchestration, and low-level components such as the kernel and the hypervisor).

We are seeking a software engineer with a good understanding of software development and optimisation at a system level. Experience in a system performance role is valuable, but not strictly necessary. Other valuable skills include a background in design of experiments, knowledge of statistical methods, and modelling and analysis of complex systems. Familiarity with kernel-level programming and/or functional programming is also an asset.

We work in a fast-moving multi-technology environment: programming languages currently used include C, OCaml and Python; operating systems include Linux and Windows. Previous knowledge of these specific technologies is not required for this role, but an ability to learn any or all of them quickly is expected.

The successful candidate would probably have a strong academic background with one or more degrees in computing, software engineering, mathematics or experimental sciences.

We actively contribute to several open source projects (including Xen, Linux Kernel, and Xapi), and we follow an agile development methodology. Our developers interact with customers, partners, other Citrix product groups, and with the open source community.

Responsibilities

  • Analysis of software internals and behaviour to identify performance problem areas
  • Definition of scales of measure of performance in a complex system
  • Proposing, prototyping and productising software changes to improve system performance
  • Working as part of a self-organising team, and providing daily updates of own work, within an agile framework

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific or mathematical discipline
  • 2 or more years’ experience of software development
  • Unix or Linux experience
  • Ability to learn new areas quickly and work at a detailed level right across the software stack
  • Ability to conduct a research project both on one’s own and within a team

In addition, experience in any of the following areas would be valuable:

  • Server virtualisation in general, and Xen or Citrix Hypervisor in particular
  • Distributed systems
  • Datacentre-sized deployments
  • Cloud infrastructure
  • Enterprise network and storage configuration
  • Linux kernel internals
  • Software profiling and performance analysis
  • Agile development practices
  • Open-source development processes, and interaction with open source communities
  • Interaction with customers
  • Knowledge of different types of programming languages, such as procedural languages (e.g., C, C++, C# or Java); scripting languages (e.g., Python); and functional languages (e.g., OCaml, ML, F# or Haskell).
