This post is for a Clinical Fellow in Oesophago-Gastric and Laparoscopic Surgery and is designed to support the activities of the OG Unit and provide specialist training at post CCT level in OG Surgery. This is a one year post specifically intended for senior trainees seeking additional experience in OG Surgery before applying for consultant posts in OG Surgery.
The Oesophago-Gastric unit is well supported with 2 SpRs, 1 SHO and 2 F1s. There are two upper GI clinical nurse specialists, 3 dedicated OG dietitians, an excellent physiotherapy team and exceptional anaesthetic/intensive care support. The Trust offers full step down care for major resections and emergency cases where required, and a dedicated upper GI ward. Experience in the use of standardised enhanced recovery pathways will also be gained.
The Clinical Fellow will attend the weekly multi-disciplinary team meeting, out-patient clinics, endoscopy and theatre sessions. There will specifically be opportunities to undertake training in laparoscopic and minimally invasive OG cancer surgery, complex benign OG surgery for hiatus hernias and achalasia and endoscopic therapies. The successful applicant will also take part in the General Surgery on-call SpR rota.
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in audit arranged by the firms, will have the opportunity to make presentations to the Surgical Department meetings and will be expected to undertake teaching for undergraduate students from both Imperial College and Southampton.
Although this is not a training post, continued professional development is encouraged. Support in studying will be given to appropriate appointees.
