The Education Academy within Barts Health is expanding in response to the need with increasing numbers of students and trainees and commitment to offer the best educational experience for our trainees. There is a real need to ensure that students receive excellent tuition and that trainees have the best possible educational supervision. In line with our Education Strategy, we intend to improve education by building an Education Fellow faculty base made up of Specialty Teaching Fellows who contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate training, and support Inter-professional Innovations.
Barts Health Simulation Service has three dedicated Simulation and Essential Clinical Skills Centres based at Newham General Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital and the Royal London. Each of these centers has a proud history of being innovative and award winning. These departments are teaching areas with fully equipped simulation and clinical skills teaching and Haptic Clinical Skills facilities.
The successful post holder for this post will be involved primarily with developing educational opportunities for Obstetrics and Gynaecology through a wide range of teaching modalities including simulation based training, clinical skills, lectures, teaching clinics, a bedside teaching.
The post holder will have the opportunity to work across sites with other education fellows. From August 2018 all fellows joining our team will be invited to join our Education Forum where fellows have access to a structured development programme. All our fellows are encouraged to undertake a PG Cert in Education and funding will be available towards supporting this. The post: We are looking for Obstetrics and Gynaecology trainees (above ST3) with an interest in Medical Education, and Simulation. Three posts are available: One would be based at the Whipps Cross University Hospital site, one at Newham University Hospital and the other at the Royal London site. All these hospitals are part of Barts NHS Trust.
The contract is 12 month, fixed-term and is 50:50 teaching and service delivery. 50 % of the time will be dedicated to Education Delivery. 50% of the time will be undertaken within the chosen Clinical Speciality. This is a 40 hour week contract with no on calls as part of this post. You will be expected to have at least four years of accredited basic general obstetrics and gynaecology training to the level of ST 4 or equivalent. Consideration to candidates will be given to trainees who have not completed the MRCOG.
This would typically suit anyone wishing to undertake further training in a medical specialty and education prior to or as part of an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from their Specialist Registrar training programme. For the latter prior agreement must be sought with the relevant Specialty Training Committee (STC) and Deanery.
The post will have opportunities to be involved in other teaching programmes including undergraduate medical trainees, Foundation Trainees, and interdisciplinary simulation training.
Personal DevelopmentThe post holder would be responsible for their own personal development plan, with regards to both service and educational work. Regular appraisal must be undertaken with their clinical supervisor, and the Director of Medical Education. The post holder will work closely with the Associate Director of Simulation to identify Educational Deliverables.
