What does a Comparative and Translational Sciences Industrial Placement have to offer?

Comparative and Translational Sciences Industrial Placement position 2019-20.
At GSK our Comparative and Translational Sciences group contributes to the development of medicines for patients by improving the choice and validation of translational preclinical models and enhancing the conduct of efficacy and safety studies.

We now have the opportunity for an Industrial Placement student to join the Comparative and Translational Sciences (CTS) group within GSK in Hertfordshire.

The CTS group comprises of veterinarians, PhD investigators and scientists who work in partnership with drug discovery scientists, pathophysiology, pharmacology, toxicology and welfare experts to select, design, develop, and report highly reproducible, translatable in vivo models.

The Industrial Placement candidate will provide scientific support to program and project teams for the utilisation of in vivo models and novel biomarkers in drug discovery and development, including analytical expertise in comparative biology, translational science, and the development of human disease relevant models.

This is a highly diverse, rapidly moving group, who’s research is aligned with current and prospective business requirements. Recent areas of research have included: design of custom gene expression cards for characterisation of transgenic models; bespoke immunofixation assay to assess clinical trial endpoints; development of CAR T-cell therapy for oncology indications; gut microbiome assessment of in vivo models.

The successful candidate would be expected to work across matrix lines identifying and developing analytical platforms for measurements of emerging and experimental biomarkers in support of pre-clinical in vivo model utilisation.
In addition to development of analytical skills, assay development and evaluation of platform technology, the candidate will develop scientifically through in-depth literature review, data analyses and correlation of findings with other pathophysiological endpoints. Students will be encouraged to publish and present their work within and external to GSK.

Degree Requirements:

  • Must be on track for a 2.1 (or above) in an undergraduate degree in biological sciences, pharmacology or biomedical sciences.
  • You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of an undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement.
