At GCHQ, our mission is to protect Britain from ever-evolving threats. It’s incredibly varied work as the UK’s infrastructure, businesses and way of life are constantly targeted. By gathering information and looking into communications, our organisation aims to stop this. It means you’ll have one of the most unique and interesting careers there is to offer.

With the ever-evolving challenges we face, we need inquisitive individuals from all backgrounds, with skills that span maths and computer science, such as networking and programming. Join us, and you’ll be solving varied and interesting problems, using analytical skills and a broad range of mathematical approaches. We work in areas including cryptography and cryptanalysis; network exploitation; cyber security; data science; machine learning; mathematical modelling and more. By putting theory into practice, we create end-to-end solutions to real world problems.

Our Mathematicians and Cryptographers work in in interdisciplinary teams. They often use some of Europe’s most powerful computers to influence decisions made by government agencies. While each person brings their own particular expertise, everyone shares the same mathematical curiosity, drive to solve problems and desire to learn new skills.

Our work draws on a variety of topics from pure and applied mathematics, including algebra, probability, number theory, statistics and optimisation. To join, you’ll have, or expect to gain, at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in a mathematical discipline, including (but not limited to) mathematics, computer science, statistics and physics. An A grade (or equivalent) in A-Level mathematics is also required. We also have opportunities for those who have recently obtained, or are in the final stages of a doctorate. In return, you’ll take advantage of flexible working, enjoy on-the-job training, and join a world-class community.

To make sure you’re always being supported and developed, we’ll provide on-the-job training and arrange for you to work with different teams across our world-class, forward-thinking community. Not only that, our flexible working policy means you’ll maintain a healthy work/life balance.
